We all have that one thing in our lives that inspires us, motivates us and pushes us to want more for ourselves. I have only recently discovered what inspires me in my writing and what played a massive role in my life to date and that is MUSIC.
Music has this incredible ability to move us, lift our moods and take us to another place. I grew up in a home with a Mum that loved music. She was forever playing music and dancing around, she would vacuum the house during our nap times absolutely blasting Fleetwood Mac and singing at the top of her lungs! Thinking back, I am not sure how we all managed to sleep through her lounge room concerts. I believe that is the reason why I have always been that person that needs background music, whether I am cooking dinner, driving or now writing, I always have music playing. I have since discovered I don’t seem to be a big fan of silence.
When I first begin writing Moore, Than a Pretty Face, I didn’t even realize that I tend to listen to music based on my mood on the day and for that reason, it is forever changing. As I had said in my previous blog, I was run off my feet, I was stressed and feeling lost. The music I had been listening to, to try and de-stress myself became the soundtrack for my novel. I started a playlist on Spotify and every morning as I would start my day I would listen to it, I would listen to it as I drove my car and I would find myself pulling over during my commute to work just to jot down notes. The music somehow gave me story ideas and got me back in the writing zone every time. I would just write a sentence and I was able to fill in the rest when I got home. The lyrics I would listen to had no relevance to my story but it seemed to draw the words from within. I found for me, as a first-time writer, that the music has helped me no matter what my surroundings were at the time and I was able to come back every day to where I had left off and continue with Ella’s story.
The beautiful thing is that the memories are forever captured in the music. One year after writing, when I hear of the songs from that original playlist and I am instantly transported back to a specific chapter or page and I can remember how I felt in that exact moment which is very special to me.
We are all so diverse and all have different inspirations whether it is watching a movie, following the steps of a role model, taking a holiday or listening to music. The trick is just finding that motivation and using it as a tool to inspire us to go for that job promotion, take risks we never would have dared, chase our dreams and help get us through the best and the worst times in life.
Get inspired by what inspires you and bring out that creative side!
